This Struggle is Real, Part 1: Walter Wallace’s Death and the Rotten System/Esta Lucha es Real, Parte 1: La Muerte de Walter Wallace y el sistema podrido

Walter Wallace Jr. was murdered last night, another human being killed at the hands of the police. Another Black working class man in Philadelphia was killed while his community and his family helplessly pleaded for his life.

The Democratic Socialists of America mourns with every human being, and we mourn specifically with the Black community everywhere. But we are not only filled with sadness: we are filled with rage, determination, and passion for the defense of life, freedom, and justice for all people. We call for the firing of the police officers involved in the killing. But this is only the beginning. The institutions that are killing us must be defunded, dismantled, and abolished. Cops do not keep us safe. We must build people power and we must replace every rotten institution in our society.

To address state-sponsored violence and terror, we must assure that Black and Brown lives matter by bringing about a thorough political and social revolution in this country. America’s working class is suffering the severe pain of this pandemic. Black and Brown working class America has been absolutely devastated by COVID-19. Honoring the hundreds of thousands of lives lost to this virus and to police violence means supporting policies like the Breathe Act, which calls for a reinvestment in Black and brown communities and a divestment from policing. Had the Breathe Act been in place, Walter Wallace may have gotten the care he deserved rather than death at the hands of the police.

Politicians who claim to care about the working class must also support the Emergency Health Guarantee Act and Medicare for All, because quality healthcare is a human right. They must open up and rebuild hospitals. They must support full restoration of public schools. They must guarantee good jobs, safe working conditions, and the ability to organize. And they must begin immediately with Black and Brown working class communities across this country. These needs uplift everyone, but there can be no denial that these are essential for the uplift and preservation and liberation of Black and Brown Life.

The socialist movement is on the march and we call on all of those politicians who say they are with the people to show us. Stand with working class Black people. Stand with working class Brown people. Stand with those whose full humanity has long been denied. Stand with those fighting for Black and Brown Lives!

Do it! Do it Now!
Get! It! Done!
