DSA stands in solidarity with the current Central American caravan on an exodus to the United States. As a result of U.S. intervention and imperialism, political turmoil in Honduras and Nicaragua, and capitalist-driven environmental destruction in Guatemala and El Salvador, migrants have been forced to either flee or stay in a capitalist-made laboratory of violence.

The Trump administration is mounting a fear campaign in an attempt to win the November Congressional election, grow the nativist movement in the country, and legitimate the further militarization of Mexico-U.S. border in order to normalize a narrative of war and violence. We denounce the deployment of 5,000 troops as the response to the caravan and Trump’s absurd declaration of intent to block citizenship for millions of children born in the U.S., a violation of the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Contrary to the recent Trump Administration statements accusing migrants of invading, the caravan reflects the agency of the international working class to find new homes to survive and thrive.

The United States should open its borders to all migrants seeking asylum — mostly Hondurans in the current caravan — and attempting to escape U.S.-made environments. While those eligible for refugee status should obviously be admitted as required by the Convention Relating to the Status of Migrants, a United Nations Multilateral Treaty (1951), and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1946), additionally, all those who desire to enter the country should be welcomed with embracing arms.

Under a brazen white supremacist and nationalist immigration policy, the Trump administration has severely restricted immigration to the U.S. Within the past year under Donald Trump, the U.S. has admitted only 22,491 refugees — one of the lowest numbers on record. The admissions count for the 2018 fiscal year, which ended on September 30, was less than half the number of refugees admitted in FY 2017 (53,716) and about one-quarter of the number of people admitted in FY 2016 (84,994).

The U.S. must welcome these migrants seeking asylum and be held accountable for destabilizing these countries through its foreign policy. We must put an end to international free-market trade that allows for the free movement of capital, but not of people, and has led to agricultural and economic devastation, civil wars, environmental destruction, state and social violence, and systemic poverty.

The U.S. needs an immigration policy that recognizes the rights of the international working class. We need international solidarity with immigrants, not national security from them. We need a national policy that eliminates U.S. military and economic interventions across the world in support of international corporations, the upper class, and totalitarian, repressive regimes.  We will fight for a government here in the United States that implements an anti-imperialist foreign policy, and a radically different approach to immigration policy. We demand the abolition of borders. We demand to #LetThemIn.

DSA se solidariza con la actual caravana centroamericana en un éxodo a los Estados Unidos. Como resultado de la intervención estadounidense y del imperialismo, la agitación política en Honduras y Nicaragua, y la destrucción ambiental en Guatemala y en El Salvador provocada por los capitalistas, los migrantes se han visto obligados a huir o permanecer en un laboratorio de violencia hecho por el capitalismo.

La administración de Trump está organizando una campaña de miedo con el intento de ganar las elecciones del Congreso en noviembre, hacer crecer el movimiento nativista en el país y hacer legitima la militarización de la frontera entre México y los Estados Unidos para normalizar la narrativa de la guerra y la violencia. Denunciamos el despliegue de 5,000 militares como respuesta a la caravana y la absurda declaración de intención de bloquear la ciudadanía para millones de niños nacidos en los Estados Unidos, que es en violación de la decimocuarta enmienda a la Constitución de los Estados Unidos. Al contrario a las declaraciones recientes que acusan a los migrantes de invadir, la caravana refleja el esfuerzo de la clase obrera internacional para encontrar nuevos hogares para sobrevivir y prosperar.

Los Estados Unidos debe abrir sus fronteras a todos los migrantes buscando asilo—principalmente hondureños en la caravana actual—e intentando a escaparse del ambiento creado por los Estados Unidos. Lucharemos por un gobierno aquí en los Estados Unidos que implementa una política exterior anti-imperialista, y un planteamiento radicalmente diferente a la política de inmigración.
