From the National Political Committee — Hot Socialist Summer
Dear comrades,
This summer is heating up with activity! Chapters are stepping up to combat the public health and climate crisis when and where the government refuses to:
- NYC DSA organized the distribution of over 12,000 N95 masks to workers to keep each other safe from toxic wildfire smoke.
- Over 75 democratic socialist electeds and staff came together in D.C. to talk policy and make connections thanks to the How We Win Conference put together by the DSA Fund (our 501c3 sister organization) in partnership with Jacobin and the Nation.
- In Maine, DSA handily defeated No on A through their Campaign for a Liveable Portland by 67%, a measure designed to roll back rent control.
- And in New Jersey, a DSA-led coalition helped secure a housing win, with Right to Counsel approved through a unanimous council vote.
- Chapters across the country, from Worcester to Los Angeles, are standing strong with members of WGA as the strike hits its sixth week.
Our Strike Ready campaign, our top national priority, is in full swing as more than 60 chapters prepare their solidarity efforts. This past weekend, workers signaled to UPS that they will strike if provoked, voting overwhelmingly by 97% to authorize a strike ahead of the contract expiring August 1st. This means that 340,000 UPS workers are ready to hit the picket line, and we are ready to stand with them if they strike for their just demands.
Internally, we are gearing up for our 2023 National Convention. You can now review our 2021-2023 NPC recommendations! Every resolution, including the NPC recs, can be amended. Amendments require 300 signatures and must be submitted by Wednesday 6/28. NPC candidates will also be finalized this week, and we want to make sure you have the opportunity to submit your questions for our candidates, who will be announced on Friday 6/23! To win the world we want, we need all of our comrades at the table, so we are also asking members to make a donation to the Solidarity Fund that directly covers costs like travel and housing scholarships and accessibility needs, including onsite child watch for parents and accommodations for Convention delegates with disabilities. Finally, we have our final NPC quarterly meeting taking place Saturday 7/15-Sunday 7/16. This meeting is open to all members in good standing. You can register to watch here.
Solidarity,
Your National Political Committee
