Abortion Funds Are Mutual Aid: Join the 2021 Fund-a-Thon

It’s that time of year again! The DSA Socialist Feminist Working Group invites you, your chapter and comrades to raise money for your local abortion fund through the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF)’s 2021 Annual Abortion Access Fund-a-Thon. So far this year, DSA teams have raised over $48,000! For this year’s Fund-a-Thon, we need all hands on deck to help us meet our goal of raising $100,000. Get your comrades together and give to one of the great teams listed below!

DSA members participate every year. In 2019, a total of 75 DSA teams brought in more than $120,000. But because the COVID-19 pandemic hit right as the 2020 Fund-a-Thon started, DSA teams were only able to bring in about $30,000 last year. This year we’re coming back stronger.

We believe that abortion care is health care, and that health care is a human right. We know that attacks on abortion access are attacks on the working class. That’s why the Socialist Feminist Working Group continues to organize for the Abortion Access Fund-a-Thon and why DSA is taking part in the 2021 fundraiser to ensure our communities can access the abortion care and support they deserve.

Abortion access has been eroded from 40 years of legislative attacks and restrictions on abortion clinics, neoliberalism and by health care being further privatized. Abortion funds help folks access abortion by covering some costs of their procedure, travel stays, childcare, and they providing emotional support and fight abortion stigma.

Abortion funding is mutual aid. It is the redistribution of wealth to cover medical costs, but it is also a community stepping up to fill a basic need where the State has failed – and an invitation for that person to join our movement!

So what is Fund-a-Thon? The National Network of Abortion Funds hosts the annual Fundathon (formally known as the Bowlathon), and is a national organization affiliated with over 75 local abortion funds, many of them completely volunteer-run. You pull together a team (or do it solo!) and fundraise for your local fund through a number of tactics!

DSA has participated since 2016, and over the last three years we’ve raised nearly $250,000 for abortion funds around the country. Now more than ever, abortion funds need our help. COVID-19 and our flailing capitalist economy have put a further strain on clinics, abortion funds, and patients who were barely getting by before the pandemic.
