Under Section 1: Democracy, Liberty and Solidarity- You state in Liberty that:
“We are committed to a freedom of religion and conscience that acknowledges the rights of those for whom spiritual concerns are central and the rights of those who reject organized religion.”
First of all, I am a Socialist, and although I agree with just about all of your stated tenets, I would NEVER agree to the statement above for the following reason.
Religion, any religion (especially mono-theistic ones) are the antithesis of a rational, intelligent and civilized society, and has demonstrated time and again throughout history to be THE primary force responsible for more ignorance, impoverishment, suffering and death of human beings then any other cause which could be considered preventable.
Anyone who believes that their (or other peoples) destiny is controlled by the sun, the moon, or the stars, or by an invisible being in the sky, (or perhaps under a rock) is by definition delusional, and again as history has demonstrated, when society allows delusionals to take part in running that society, bad things ALWAYS happen, it’s tenement to putting a pyromaniac in charge of preventing forest fires.
Although as a Socialist I can certainly understand the practical need, necessity and desire for unity, it should not cross over into appeasement, which is just what such a placating position with regard to religion is, just be intellectually honest and get rid of it, stop trying to make a deal with the devil.
In Unity,
