Pete Davis and Martin Drake: Participatory Governance and a Democratic Alternative

A robust conception of democracy is at the core of leftist politics. Unfortunately, we’ve inherited a very weak version of democracy. We’re told government-appointed bureaucrats and “experts” should do all of our decision making for us. We’re told democracy doesn't apply to the private sector. Even our civic advocacy groups tell us “give us your money, and our lawyers/lobbyists/activists will do the democratic work for you.”

We need a much broader vision of democracy. Democracy means participation in decisions over how resources are allocated in society. Democracy means control over the public and private institutions that dominate our lives. And, most importantly, democracy means inclusion: a single citizenry, with equal right and ability to participate in decisions afforded to all—because liberation is simply privilege extended if it doesn’t apply to all of us.

Please join the Democratic Alternative's Pete Davis and Martin Drake this Thursday at 6:30pm EST/5:30pm CT/4:30pm MT/3:30PST for a discussion about what a vision for robust, participatory democracy looks like, how it forms the bedrock of leftist politics, and what DSA and other civic groups can do to practice participation and inclusion to strengthen their own communities.
