 FIGHTING THE BANKS IN ATLANTA

Last week we reported on the April 4 ?Fighting Foreclosures: A Call to Action? conference organized by Metro Atlanta DSA and the USAction affiliated Georgia Rural Urban Summit. Atlanta has the nation's third highest home foreclosure rate, and another 10,000 foreclosures were just announced. More than 120 activists attended, who sparked the formation of the Atlanta Fighting Foreclosures Coalition. Virtually every attendee signed up to take action in the next few weeks to ?shine a light? on some of the banks who are the biggest offenders.

The first action was held April 21st against Wachovia, demanding, ?No more predatory lending! No more foreclosures! Modify loans so our neighbors can stay in their homes! Do it because you took the bailout money!"

More than 100 enthusiastic demonstrators participated in the Wachovia picket and rally, including contingents from community, religious and labor organizations as well as Atlanta DSA.

Media covering the event included all four of the city's TV stations, along with the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Atlanta Inquirer, the Atlanta Progressive News and others. Demonstrators attempting to deliver a letter to Wachovia's management were rebuffed.

A tape of the event is on You Tube. And here is the Atlanta Progressive News story.

Other actions are being organized, and we will keep reporting on them.

DEMOCRATIC LEFT SPRING ISSUE OUT

James Galbraith in No Return to Normal argues that both the economic crisis and its solution are bigger and more problematic than most realize; Bill Fletcher Jr. writes about the mission of the left in this crisis period; and Jason Schulman tallies the good and bad in Robert Reich's latest. There's also report on the recent youth conference along with other important material. The spring issue is in the mail now, and you can view it now, online, by clicking HERE.
