BERNIE SANDERS TO SPEAK AT DSA NATIONAL CONVENTION

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will be the keynote speaker at DSA's National Convention, addressing the convention dinner Friday, November 9th. This will mark the first time that a U.S. senator, let alone a self-identified socialist senator, has addressed a socialist organization in the United States. The convention will be held November 9-11th in Atlanta.

DSA MEMBERS URGED TO BECOME DELEGATES TO NATIONAL CONVENTION

In a special mailing to all DSA members National Director Frank Llewellyn has urged every member to consider attending the Atlanta convention. Llewellyn's letter cited both the opportunity to participate in an historic event and the great opportunities that changing political conditions provide for DSA. The letter will arrive in most members' mailboxes Labor Day week. To nominate yourself (DSA members only) to be a convention delegate by email, click here. Please include all of your contact information in the email.

DSA GROWS BY 28% OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS, 40% OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS

Each convention provides an opportunity to measure the growth of DSA. Analysis of the 2007 convention apportionment shows net growth of 28.3% over the last two years and just over 40% since the 2003 convention in Detroit. DSA National Director Frank Llewellyn attributed the growth to successful direct mail programs, the improved political climate and increased activity on projects such as the 2007 house parties for Bernie Sanders. He went on to say, "Turning membership growth into another increase in activism, organizing and increased political visibility is a challenge to each of us; it will be one of the things that we have to focus on at our Atlanta convention."

CONVENTION WEB PAGE LAUNCHED

The Website for DSA's Atlanta convention has been launched. The Website contains important logistical information about, the official call to, and the temporary rules for the convention. At the site, DSA members can nominate themselves to be delegates to and register for the convention. As draft convention resolutions are prepared, they will be posted for review, consideration and discussion; a schedule will also be posted when it is completed. You can visit the site now by clicking here.
