SPEAKING TOUR HIGHLIGHTS ECONOMIC JUSTICE AGENDA
DSA's National Director, Frank Llewellyn, will spend the week after Labor Day in Washington and California spreading the word about DSA's Economic Justice Agenda as well as DSA's 2007 Convention in Atlanta.
He will visit Seattle, the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles, San Diego and Sacramento in a series of evening or late afternoon briefings intended to build support for the program and increase participation in DSA's November Convention.
The Census Bureau's latest poverty numbers make clear the importance of an economic justice agenda. Five years into an economic recovery, we finally saw a slight decrease in the official poverty rate from 12.6% to 12.3%, but even then the reduction was almost entirely the result of improvements for those aged 65 and over. There was no decrease in any other age group, and the overall number of Americans living in poverty remained at 36.5 million.
More important was the jump in the number of Americans without health insurance, which rose by 5% to 47 million (including 600,000 more children), the largest increase in five years. The number of Americans without health insurance hit a new high at 15.8% of the population, and for the second year in a row, the number of children without insurance increased. These numbers reconfirm the trend documented by new tax statistics from the Internal Revenue Service (News from DSA, August 23): that even those of us with jobs, including many higher-income members of the middle class, live a life of economic insecurity in which a decent paycheck, health insurance and retirement security are increasingly at risk.
