2007 DSA CONVENTION SET FOR ATLANTA

DSA's 2007 National Convention will be held in Atlanta, Ga., widely regarded as "the capital of the South." The convention begins Friday morning, Nov. 9, concluding Sunday afternoon, Nov, 11. Unlike previous conventions held in hotels the site of the meeting will be the local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union hall.

In another departure from the past practice of housing delegates in a single hotel, we can avail ourselves of  several hotels near the site, all of which will offer room blocks at special rates to delegates. The result will be that delegates will be able to pick from a range of available room rates. Complete hotel information will be available on DSA's Web site when the 2007 Convention page is launched early in the new year.

The Atlanta convention will be DSA's first national event held in the South, and we are grateful to DSA's new Atlanta local for agreeing to  host the conclave.

DEMOCRATIC LEFT  PRODUCTION GAFFE

David Richardson's article in the last issue (Fall 2006) of Democratic Left was inadvertently printed  minus the final three paragraphs. Richardson's unexpurgated article can be found on the Democratic Left page of DSA's Web site. We deeply regret the error. YOUTH CONFERENCE SET FOR FEBRUARY

Young Democratic Socialists, DSA's youth section, has set February 16-18 in New York City as the date of its annual winter conference. Featured speakers include DSA Honorary Co-Chair Barbara Ehrenreich and noted linguist and political commentator Noam Chomsky. Details are available on YDS's Web site.

Building a new generation of socialist activists is one of our major priorities, and doing that takes financial backing. Tax-deductible contributions to the DSA Fund to support the conference and travel scholarships for young people may be made at DSA's Web site with a MASTERCARD or VISA (Please indicate that the contribution is intended to support youth activity on the credit card form.). To make your contribution on-line visit DSA's Web site at: http://www.dsausa.org/join/index.html

BUSH ADMINISTRATION MOVES FROM ANTI- LABOR POLICIES TO STRIKE BREAKING AND HARASSMENT OF UNION ACTIVISTS

Labor journalist David Bacon writes that union activists are being targeted by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in conducting raids on immigrants at work sites. The article is posted on DSA's Web site at: http://www.dsausa.org/DavidBacon/index.html.

Meanwhile the U.S. Army announced that it may force striking Goodyear Tire and Rubber  workers to return to work at selected locations. Goodyear forced 15,000 United Steelworkers of America members at 16 locations in the U.S. and Canada out on strike on October 5. The union has mounted a vigorous campaign against Goodyear, which recently asked the union to return to the bargaining table. Videos and other information about the Steelworker actions related to Goodyear are available at the Steelworkers Web site.

SURGE NO ANSWER TO IRAQI CIVIL WAR; SUPPORT JANUARY 27TH DC PROTEST

The latest scheme advocated by defenders of the Administration Iraq policy is a "temporary" increase in troop levels in order to pacify Baghdad. Even General John Abizaid, senior U.S. commander in the Middle East, voices serious doubts about the wisdom of this approach in todays NY Times. This plan is a slap in the face to American voters who overwhelmingly voted to bring the troops home.

DSA urges the largest possible turn out for the January 27th March in Washington, DC to demand Congress end the war.
