San Diego DSA Hosts Western Regional Conference

The San Diego Local of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) will host the 2005 Western Regional Conference on March 5, 2005.  The location is the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego located in the Hillcrest area at 4190 Front Street , San Diego , California 92103 .


DSA members from San Diego and the West Coast, as well as non-members who are interested in the topics to be addressed at the conference, are all invited to attended.  All sessions of the conference are open to the public.


The basic political theme of the conference is the labor, economic and environmental implications of San Diego as part of the U.S./Mexican Border Region.  Covered under this general theme will be the following subjects:


  • Wal-Mart and Low Wage Economy
  • Saving Social Security
  • Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)
  • The Maquiladora Industry

In addition, the conference will discuss DSA Local Development, and the different styles of organizing among the Socialist organizations in the San Diego Region. 


The organization of the conference is as follows:


There will be a series of workshops during the day, with a break for lunch, covering all the above topics.  In addition there will be an outreach, public evening event in the format of a panel discussion with invited U.S. and Tijuana activists on the subject, “Globalization: the Border Region and the Maquiladora Industry.”


The goals of the conference are to educate the participants about the above subjects, and also to encourage activism for social and economic justice.
