DSA's membership has increased by nearly thirteen percent since July of 2003. The increase in membership is largely the result of a direct mail campaign that featured an invitation to join by long time DSA member, former SAG President and noted actor Edward Asner.
This is the first substantial increase in membership in a number of years. "Without the direct mail campaign we would have continued to tread water," said DSA's National Director Frank Llewellyn. "This was the first such campaign in almost ten years; we expect to be able to continue to undertake modest campaigns each year," he continued.
The membership increase compared the membership level used to apportion the 2003 DSA convention with the membership used to apportion the November 11-13 DSA convention to be held in Los Angeles. Both measurements were taken in mid-July.
