The 2003 DSA Convention will be held November 14-16 in Detroit Michigan at the Hotel Pontchartrain (Two Washington Blvd.) in downtown Detroit. The theme of the convention is: The Other America Revisited: An Alternative Economic Vision for America?s Future.
This is the second DSA convention to be held in Detroit. The first in 1981 was the merger convention in which the name of the then "new" organization was set. "We are happy to be returning to Detroit", said Frank Llewellyn, the DSA National Director. "Detroit DSA is working very hard to make this a very special event. This will be a very important convention as it comes just before the Presidential primary process intensifies and the first major gathering since the Republicans assumed control of all three branches of government. 2004 will be progressive's chance to end the crisis in democracy which began with the stolen 2000 election and that has had such devastating consequences for ordinary American's quality of life as well as the direction of public policy," he continued.
A Convention Page will be established on the DSA web site in the next few weeks. It will be the central clearing house for convention information. Additionally a special pre-convention list serve moderated by DSA NPC member Jason Schulman is to be established. Its initial task will be to continue the mission dialogue mandated by the 2001 convention.
The apportionment for the Convention will be set in mid July. Delegate elections will take place in the late summer and fall.
A special room rate for Convention attendees of $79 (for a single or a double room) plus tax has been obtained. To obtain the special rates delegates will have to make their reservations by October 11, 2003. To make a reservation call the Hotel Ponchartrain at (313) 965-0200 (ask for reservations). Make sure you request the special rate for the Democratic Socialists of America convention.
